Certified translation – explained in brief
What a certified translation is, who may produce it and when an apostille is also required.
Get free adviceCertified translation
For authoritiesA translation whose completeness and accuracy is confirmed by a court-authorised (sworn) translator with a certification statement, stamp and signature. It is required whenever a document in a foreign language is submitted to a German authority or institution.
Sworn translators
Translators who have been officially appointed for their language by a German regional court (Landgericht) or higher regional court (Oberlandesgericht). Depending on the federal state, they are called authorised, sworn or publicly appointed – only they may certify translations.
Certified copy
Not to be confused with a certified translation: a certified copy only confirms that the copy matches the original. This is done by the citizens’ office (Bürgeramt) or a notary, for example – not by a translation agency.
Apostille and legalisation
If a document is to be used abroad, some countries additionally require an apostille or legalisation. The foreign authority decides which form is needed – we are happy to advise you.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about translations
Costs, delivery time, recognition and confidentiality – answered in brief.
Ask your questionHow much does a certified translation cost?
The price depends on length, language pair, subject area and delivery time. For standard documents such as birth certificates, we give you a binding price after upload – costs only arise once you accept.
How long does a translation take?
That depends on length, language and subject area. We state a binding delivery date in our quote. If it is urgent, please call us directly: 0208 99 04 77 (Mon–Fri 8:30 am – 4:30 pm).
Are your certified translations accepted by German authorities?
Yes. Certified translations are produced by court-authorised (sworn) translators. They are accepted by registry offices, immigration offices, courts, notaries and universities in Germany.
Is a photo or scan of my document enough?
For a quote, a clearly legible photo or scan is enough – via the upload form, email or WhatsApp. You can also drop off your documents at our office in Mülheim an der Ruhr-Styrum without an appointment.
How will I receive my translation?
By post, by email or for collection at our office. You receive certified translations as signed and stamped originals.
Which languages do you translate?
More than 170 languages and dialects – from English, Arabic and Turkish to less common languages such as Tigrinya, Dari or Tamil. Further languages and dialects on request.
Are my documents treated confidentially?
Yes. All our language professionals are bound by confidentiality, our processes are certified to ISO 9001:2015 by TÜV SÜD, and data is processed in compliance with the GDPR.
